K-12 LGBTQ+ History Teacher Symposium & Lesson Plans

Are you a K-12 teacher passionate about HIV/AIDS history? Do you want to build your curriculum development experience and get paid for it?

This July, One Institute presents “STORIES: Teaching HIV/AIDS Histories,” our annual K-12 LGBTQ+ History Teacher Symposium, in partnership with ONE Archives at the USC Libraries.

This year, One Institute became stewards of STORIES: The AIDS Monument. Located in West Hollywood Park, the AIDS Monument remembers lost loved ones, celebrates the heroic accomplishments of caregivers, and educates new generations about the history of HIV/AIDS.

The July 2026 symposium will convene a cohort of ten K-12 teachers from Los Angeles along with One Institute’s curriculum specialists, historic leaders in HIV/AIDS art and activism, and archivists from ONE Archives. Together, we will begin to develop new California standards-aligned lesson plans on HIV/AIDS histories, using primary sources from ONE Archives, that advance implementation of California’s FAIR Education Act.

Participants will engage in three full days of programming (Monday, July 13 to Weds, July 15, 9 AM to 3:30 PM) at One Gallery/The AIDS Monument (Mon + Tues) and ONE Archives (Weds). Breakfast and lunch will be provided Monday through Wednesday. On Thursday and Friday, participants are expected to make at least one independent research appointment at ONE Archives. Breakfast and lunch will not be provided Thursday and Friday.

Participating teachers can earn up to $500 for a completed lesson plan. An initial $250 stipend will be paid following the submission of a lesson plan draft on Friday, July 17. A final $250 stipend will be paid following a series of monthly coaching meetings (August 2026 – February 2027) and the submission of a completed lesson plan by the end of February 2027.

Lesson plan coaching and editing will be supported by UCLA History-Geography Project, our partners since 2018. The lesson plans will be published ahead of our National Youth HIV/AIDS Awareness Day event in April 2027. Our 26 existing lesson plans can be viewed here.

Applications are due at 11:59 PM on Sunday, June 14. Priority will be given to K-12 classroom teachers from LAUSD and LACOE public schools. History/social science, ELA, and arts teachers are especially encouraged to apply.
