ONE Gallery, West Hollywood, to Reopen in Fall 2017 After Renovation

ONE Archives is excited to announce the City of West Hollywood is currently renovating the building that houses the ONE Gallery, West Hollywood. To reopen in September 2017, the ONE Gallery is operated by the One Institute, the independent community partner of ONE Archives at the USC Libraries. These renovations will further ONE’s capacity to present innovative and culturally enriching exhibitions of queer art, culture, and history, enhancing both the immediate West Hollywood community and the L.A. region at large.

In August 2016 the City of West Hollywood approved renovations to the City owned Werle Building where ONE’s off-site exhibition venue in located. The renovations will move the ONE Gallery to prominently face Robertson Boulevard with a dedicated entrance on the front of the building leading to the new 900 square feet gallery. City renovations will also upgrade the HVAC systems, install an elevator, and bring the building up to code and ADA compliance.

The ONE Gallery will reopen September 9, 2017, with the large-scale exhibition Axis Mundo: Queer Networks in Chicano L.A., ONE Archives’ participation in Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA, a far-reaching and ambitious exploration of Latin American and Latino art in dialogue with Los Angeles. Axis Mundo is a collaboration between ONE and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, and the exhibition will be mounted simultaneously at the new ONE Gallery and MOCA Pacific Design Center.

The One Institute has operated this off-site exhibition venue since 2008 in partnership with ONE Archives at the USC Libraries. Over the past nine years the ONE Gallery has presented numerous exhibitions highlighting lesser-known histories of queer art and culture through displays of archival materials and exhibitions of contemporary queer artists. The ONE Gallery is the only venue of its kind in Southern California. Beginning in fall 2015, in anticipation of building renovations, ONE presented three exhibitions in the Long Hall at West Hollywood’s Plummer Park with support from the City of West Hollywood. These included the immersive installation KillJoy’s Kastle: A Lesbian Feminist Haunted House (October 16 – 30, 2015); the exhibition on queer collage Cock, Paper, Scissors (April 2 – July 10, 2016); and the exhibition THINGS: a queer legacy of graphic art and play (September 17 – December 11, 2016).
